Westend Seniors Activity Centre (WSAC) is changing perceptions of what a senior’s centre can be and what it means to be 55+. Boasting a 22,600 sq. ft. that is used by over 1,700 members, WSAC’s mission remains fervent in creating an inclusive community hub for adults 55+ that provides services, programs, information and activities that support healthy aging, promotes wellness, addresses isolation and advocates for active living.  Mr. Jay Pritchard, WSAC’s President makes a proclamation: “We are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of our new Executive Director, Dr. Haidong Liang.  Along with his passion and experience, Haidong brings a unique perspective to WSAC’s executive leadership team and we look forward to his advancing our efforts in advocating and supporting aging adults in our organization.”

Dr. Haidong Liang is a Gerontologist, one of very few in North America. He has committed his career to advocating and supporting the healthy aging and wellness of adults. Beyond having played a key role in the WSAC leadership team for the last 8 years, Haidong holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Leisure, Recreation & Gerontology, a Master of Arts in Tourism, Information Technology & Gerontology, and a Bachelor of Recreation Management & Community Development. “I am very excited to continue on in an Executive Director capacity with WSAC. Our Centre continues to evolve – with our programs, services, research and our capacity to engage with our community and corporate partners. When you walk into our building you can immediately see a happy busy place. It’s critical that we listen and remain responsive to our members and its users, offering programs and services that meet their current and emerging needs. I can’t imagine being in a more exciting industry and organization,” says Haidong Liang. “just like our new website address –, our goal is to be a leading senior centre in Canada for seniors.

In 2002, inspired by his father’s vision in potential challenges of global aging, Haidong, who was only 21 years old, came to Canada alone as an International Student to pursue his lifelong career in Gerontology. 16 years later, Canada has become Haidong’s second home. He met his beautiful wife Katrina Jiang in Edmonton and they have an energetic 3.5 years old boy Jia-qi (means “Canadian Dragon”). In his spare time, Haidong enjoys working out like a bodybuilder and teaching fitness, watching super hero movies with his son, doing a lot of shopping with his wife, and FaceTiming his parents, who are in China, every day.
