Dear Members and Friends of WSAC,
The health and safety of our Members, visitors, and staff is our top priority.
From the onset of the novel corona (COVID – 19) outbreak, Westend Seniors Activity Centre has been closely monitoring and following guidance from World Health Organization, Government of Canada, Alberta Government, and City of Edmonton.
On March 12, 2020, the Alberta Government announced that in the face of this rapidly evolving health threat, it is recommending that “any event that has more than 50 attendees and expects to have international participants, or involves critical infrastructure staff, seniors, or other high-risk populations should also be cancelled.” According to Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health, “The coming weeks are vital in our fight to protect Alberta from COVID-19. These are serious steps, and ones we do not take lightly. I am calling on every Albertan and organization to assist our public health efforts and do their very best to comply with the public health guidance. It is critical that Albertans come together to do our part in keeping Albertans healthy and safe.”
Also, the City of Edmonton announced today that all seniors programs will be cancelled and all city-run senior centres will be closed by Sunday (March 15, 2020).
Therefore, in line with government’s public health efforts, Westend Seniors Activity Centre will proactively close to the public starting March 13, 2020. This includes all recreation programs, drop-in activities, events, café, rentals, as well as our outreach programs. We are aware that program/service participants may become isolated because of the temporary interruption; WSAC staff are working remotely from home and will be making every effort to reach out to our members and volunteers during our Centre’s closure. For example,
- Regular update on resources/services available to seniors
- healthy recipes
- 8-Week Home Fitness Program for Seniors
- Daily Stretch Routine
We will continue to closely monitor this situation as it evolves, and will share updated information about the re-opening of the Centre with you through our communication and marketing channels (e.g., Website, phone-calls, emails, e-newsletter, Facebook).
We hope you understand that this decision was not made lightly and that with the advice of health professionals and government officials, we determined that it is in the best interest of our members and the community.
Stay Healthy Everyone, I hope to see you very soon.
