Thursday October 1st was International Day of Older Persons so we decided to celebrate by showcasing our centre to some of our local politicians

MP Kelly McCauley, MLA Jon Carson and City of Edmonton Councilor Andrew Knack all came to our centre to play pickleball with some of our members.

There feedback was amazing…

“Joining friends at Westend Seniors Activity Centre to celebrate National Seniors Day with pickleball! I’ll note the seniors barely broke a sweat while Andrew Knack and I were panting and struggling to keep up.” ~ Kelly McCauley

” Today I got a run for my money playing pickle ball with members of the Westend Seniors Activity Centre!  It reminded me how much seniors are vital, diverse and vibrant members of our society. They contribute their lived experience in many valuable ways! They are our parents and grandparents, mentors and friends, employers and employees.  They are hard workers and committed volunteers who help take care of each other and their communities.”  ~ Jon Carson

I was honoured to be part of this celebration today. Andrew Knack (our City Councillor), John Carson (our MLA) and Kelly McCauley (our MP) showed up to learn and play PickleBall with a group of WSAC members. Each of them learned the game quickly, played competitively and seemed to enjoy the experience. Hey you three, thanks for being such good sports and for showing your support for the finest Seniors Activity Centre in Canada.
~ Jay Pritchard, president, Westend Seniors Activity Centre
We also were fortunate to also meet with representatives of the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC).  We gave them a tour of our centre, told them about the many programs we are offering in-person and online and discussed ways for our organizations to work together to reach more seniors in our communities.
“Our goal is to dispel the stereotypes and myths around seniors.  When people hear the word “senior” they picture frail, vulnerable people.  Our members are full of energy and vibrant members of our community.  We will continue to showcase our programs, classes and the activities we are doing at our centre.
~ Haidong Liang, Executive Director Westend Seniors Activity Centre
