CALLING ALL KNITTERS!

We are still accepting donations at the centre of knit scarves, hats, mittens and gloves that will be sent out to area schools and other organizations who are in need this winter.

MAVIES MITTEN TREE – A TRADITION HERE AT OUR CENTRE
This initiative started 21 year ago with one of our lifetime members, Mavie Darrah.  She loved to knit for her children but once they were grown, she began looking for other’s who could enjoy her knitting. She gathered a group of fellow knitters together and there was no stopping them.

Each year, they decorate a tree at the centre with mittens and invite a class from a local elementary school to join us for a visit from Santa, the reading of the Mavie’s Mitten Tree story and a treat bag.  They also get to choose one special pair of mittens from the tree with Mavie’s help.

Over the years, the number of knit donations have ended up around 800-900 items per year which are then donated to area schools and other organizations who are in need such as the Edmonton Garrison and the Jasper Place Wellness centre.

THIS YEAR’S INTIATIVE
This year, Mavie’s Mitten Tree is set up and loaded with mittens but unfortunately, we will not be able to invite a school in like we usually do.   We have, however, been flooded with donations from everyone who has been keeping busy at home.  Once again, this year, we will be putting together bags of lovingly created hats, mitts, and scarves to go to families in need in our community.

We will still be accepting items at the center up until December 1st.  Just come to our centre’s front door, ring the bell on the left hand side of our main doors and someone will come and get your knitted donation from you.  Please attach a note telling us who you are so we can send you a thank you.
