Garden suites: What they are & Why Edmonton needs them
Garden Suites are smaller homes (400-800 square feet) in people’s backyards. They are a form of infill housing that offers social, environmental, and economic benefits to owners, renters, and the city as a whole including:
Providing homeowners with a rental income
Adding to Edmonton’s affordable rental housing stock
Acting as a mortgage helper
Helping create multi-generational living situations where aging parents or young adults can live close to their families
Helping long-time residents downsize and age in their community when their main home becomes too much work
Helping create more walkable, compact, and attractive communities that support physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing
Helping Edmonton build in instead of sprawling out
People choose to build Garden Suites for many different reasons. Whether it’s to house aging parents close to home, generate a rental income, or plan for your future, Garden Suites are a flexible form of housing that can help meet you and your family’s changing needs.
