Estate Law…what is it?
We focus on Wills, Power of Attorney and Personal Care Directive documents. We also deal with Probate and other estate issues.
Why Estate Law?
My name is Stacy Maurier and I am the founder of Estate Connection law firm.
I grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. After graduating from Fort High school, I attended both Augustana University and the University of Alberta, graduating from Law School in 2000. After law school, I headed to Grande Prairie, Alberta for my article and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2001.
Everything in life occurs offers for a reason. Some of our most painful experiences are our best teachers and are fundamental stepping stones for our future. I have no doubt that my career as an Estate Lawyer, originated with life-defining bout with the flu that I had as a a 12-year-old.
One cold and snowy day, when I was too sick to go to school, my parents took me to my grandparents’ house to be babysat. While I was curled up on my Grandparents red velour couch watching TV, there was a knock at the door. My Grandma answered the door and we were both told that my grandfather had collapsed on the sidewalk in front of their house. The ambulance was summoned and we soon learned that my grandfather had died from a heart attack.
This death caused a series of events to unfold within my family that are much too painful to put in writing. I can tell you that this crisis had a life defining effect on me. As I got older and became a lawyer, I resolved to help families prepare for the unexpected, communicate with their family and make sure we leave your loved one’s solutions, not problems.
Leaving a Legacy of Love
I once dealt with an estate where a client had taken the time to create a Will that was beautiful and left a meaningful legacy. The lady had left her 5-foot-tall potato peeler to her children in a trust. The potato peeler had been a running joke in their family, with the kids begging her to get rid of it. The mother would often tease them by telling her two children that she was going to leave it to both in her Will.
When she came to my office to write her Will, we decided to create a simple Trust which stipulated that every year at Christmas, her two children would get together and exchange the potato peeler. This trust provided a way to guarantee that the family celebrated the holidays together and share fond memories of their mother and grandmother. What a wonderful legacy she left her family!
My team at Estate Connection is committed to working with you and your family to create a legacy you can be proud of.
How We Can Help
I created Estate Connection to provide people with a comforting place to deal with the issues surrounding their family. A place where no one is judged, past grievances are forgiven and to help clients avoid problems that create conflicts within families.
You may have a situation where you are uncomfortable discussing your wishes with your family members. In these situations, we can offer our office as a place where you can gather everyone and we can act as a mediator to help communicate your wishes.
Sometimes family members are unable to act as your Executor and Attorney. In those situations, my team can either act as your Executor or assist your family in closing your estate. Whatever your situation, our goal is that we help you leave your family with solutions, not problems.
